Buying a stroller - Purchasing tips and tricks
There are numerous types of strollers available when searching for the stroller that's right for you and your child.
From jogging strollers to seat and standing-platform strollers, twin strollers to bob strollers, lightweight strollers to baby carriages. The extensive selection and market availability makes it difficult to choose the stroller that’s right for you.
With so many styles and models, each with its own attractive features, options, and accessories, how can you be sure that the stroller you choose is the one that meets your needs?
Of the many important options to consider when selecting your stroller, perhaps the main ones are:
Bassinet, stroller, or carriage?
Many strollers are designed for children age one and above (twelve months). Before this, a more traditional bassinet stroller is often the carriage option of choice.
If you already have a child, or intend to have more than one child, then a stroller that can be outfitted with a carrycot and a seat, suitable for both infants and toddlers, is ideal so, in the future, you wont need to purchase additional carriages or strollers.
By choosing a stroller that can be outfitted with a carry cot, followed by a seated option, ensures that the stroller can be used through-out your child's early development.
Traveling
While all strollers may appear practical and provide various benefits and features, choosing a stroller that folds easily into the trunk of your car means that whenever you travel, you will always be able to bring your stroller with you.
Safety
Your stroller should provide a safety harness system that secures your child comfortably. Choosing a stroller which provides a harness restraint that incorporates an easy release buckle makes it easier for you to secure and remove your child from the stroller without needing to adjust or release awkward claps or fasteners.
Reclining seat
As your child outgrows its carry cot, it is important that the stroller seat allows your child to recline. A reclinable stroller seat allows you to take your child out for walks long before they are able to sit-up unaided.
Canopy
Your stroller should provide a canopy that protects your child from weather conditions such as the harsh winter wind, autumn rain, and strong summer sunshine.
Washable fabrics
While most stroller frames can be easily wiped and cleaned, choosing a stroller whose fabrics are entirely machine washable, and can be easily removed, is essential to maintaining your stroller and ensuring its longevity.
Handle height
Many of today’s modern strollers allow you to adjust the height of the stroller handle to minimize strain on the back and lower spine.
When considering a stroller that meets your needs, it’s important to remember that the stroller handle height and position not only needs to be fully adjustable, but it also needs to be comfortable for adults pushing the stroller.
Stroller height
Just as the handle of your stroller needs to be easy to adjust and position, the height of your stroller must also be adjustable.
As your child grows and develops, the stroller seat's height needs to adjust with your child’s development. A stroller with a fully adjustable footrest position allows your child to sit comfortably and securely.
Maneuverability
Strollers come in different sizes, with different frame types, and wheel configurations.
While a heavier frame is ideal for jogging strollers, the extra weight and size makes maneuverability through shops, stairs, and crowded narrow urban areas difficult to navigate.
Strollers that do not have rotating front wheels, or have only three wheels, make turning in small spaces difficult and cumbersome.
When considering which stroller best suits your needs, remember that your ideal stroller should not only accommodate your child’s needs for transport, comfort, and growth, but also your needs for safety, stability, and maneuverability.
